Around 100 pupils from Mearns Primary School learned first-hand about sustainable building when they visited Mactaggart & Mickel’s housing development at Stewart Gardens in Newton Mearns.
The visit was part of a school project on building “sustainable structures and communities”. The primary six and seven children learned about building materials, building sustainable homes, renewable energies and the role of engineers in building houses.
To mark their visit, the children were given snap bands, nail files, water bottles, swimming caps, mobile chargers and pens. With the school approaching its 20th anniversary, Mactaggart and Mickel also donated £500 to support the celebrations.
Mactaggart & Mickel has a long association with Newton Mearns, having built homes in the area since the 1930s. The Stewart Gardens development will provide a total of 86 additional new homes in the coming years, ranging from one- to five-bedrooms, plus 28 affordable homes.
Mearns Primary teacher Sarah Harrison said: “I wanted to extend my warmest thanks to all of the members of staff at the Stuart Gardens development. We had a fabulous time and all the staff and children who attended commented on how worthwhile and insightful the experience was. The gifts were also hugely generous and the children were very grateful. I cannot thank Mactaggart & Mickel enough for all of the effort and time that went into organising our visit.”
